<image:caption>I design and direct the annual Daniel Haufler Fellowship, which brings together 10 mid-career German journalists —selected through a competitive process from hundreds of applicants—for a two-week study tour of Washington, D.C., and New York. Fellows gain insight into the U.S. media landscape through meetings at the New York Times, New Yorker, NPR, Marshal Project, Documented, Freedom of the Press Foundation, International Women’s Media Fund, Pulitzer Center, Columbia Journalism School, social media influencers, and others. Following these meetings, fellows spend an additional week in the U.S. pursuing independent reporting projects on a topic of their choice. Resulting pieces have appeared in a range of outlets, including Der Spiegel, TAZ, ARD, NDR, TagesSpiegel, and RTL.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 2024, I split my time between Kyiv and California while working as a strategic communications consultant for Georgetown Law School, supporting the EU-US-UK's Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group for Ukraine. Communicating about possible genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity is nuanced and complex, requiring the integration of dense legal frameworks and emotionally charged realities into clear, compelling language. Years of experience with complex issues such as climate change, illicit financial flows, and transitional justice have made me highly skilled at translating technical material into content that is clear, relatable, and accessible, enabling me to quickly and effectively communicate on international human rights law.</image:caption>

Its success depends on active, sustained collaboration and knowledge-sharing among funders, practitioners, economists, social researchers, and fintech specialists based around the globe—many of whom don’t typically work together. As a World Bank communications and outreach consultant, I was engaged to elevate FinEquity’s visibility and community engagement. Based on needs assessments, I developed virtual events and social media content to inspire conversation, launched a monthly newsletter with actionable content, and managed communications for both virtual and in-person gatherings, including this meeting in Singapore.</image:caption>

<image:caption>President Obama, alongside 15 other heads of state and civil society leaders, launched the Open Government Partnership (OGP) at the United Nations in 2011. When I was hired as the Secretariat’s first Director of Communications, OGP had just 15 staff and 45 member countries. By the end of my tenure, it had grown to 50 staff and 75 countries. To support this rapid expansion, I built and led a communications team that developed messaging guides, toolkits, templates, newsletters, and social media campaigns, ensuring clear, consistent, and impactful global branding and outreach. In addition, I established internal communications systems to connect and energize OGP’s diverse international network. I also led external communications for high-level summits in Cape Town, Mexico City, Tbilisi, Paris, and at the UN General Assembly—events that regularly featured heads of state and other global leaders.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Opening offices in Africa had long been a strategic goal for Greenpeace, beginning with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where deforestation is a major driver of global carbon emissions. As a senior member of Greenpeace’s Forests campaign, a French speaker, and an experienced field producer, I was brought on to project manage external relations in the DRC. The goal was to ensure that both government and civil society viewed Greenpeace not only as climate experts, but as respectful partners—sensitive to the region’s security concerns and complex social justice dynamics. Working with limited time and resources, I set up interviews on Congolese television, meetings with civil society, and a press conference aboard a Greenpeace ship sailing down the Congo River. Fifteen years later, Greenpeace continues to operate in the DRC, building on the early trust and relationships established during that foundational period.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Services - Program Management</image:title>
<image:caption>I was contracted as the first Head of Investigations for the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s Wealth of Nations, a training program for African journalists reporting on illicit financial flows. Leading a team of 12 seasoned Reuters business reporters who served as coaches for the program’s first cohort of 50 journalists across Africa, I developed and implemented core communications infrastructure for collaboration and learning between coaches and participants. This included dedicated social media channels, regular coordination calls, and targeted training and brainstorming sessions. Together, we trained journalists in financial investigation techniques, mentored them through often high-risk investigations, and helped them publish their stories.</image:caption>

This story was a last-minute exclusive that required coordinating a maze of logistics to reach a refugee camp in record time. Significant experience and well-honed instinct allow me to develop and advance programs and projects, even in the most complex or unpredictable environments. Present me with a logistical challenge, drop me into unfamiliar terrain, or ask me to rally disparate stakeholders, and I’ll thrive. I also draw on a wide network of contacts — there’s almost always someone who knows someone where I’m headed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Services - Storytelling</image:title>
<image:caption>For Greenpeace International, I traveled to Indonesia to document large-scale deforestation driven by the palm oil industry. Deforestation accounts for about 11% of annual greenhouse gas emissions—a powerful fact, if you pause to really take it in. Yet cognitive science confirms what humans have long known instinctively: telling human stories is by far the most powerful way to make facts feel real and relevant to audiences. In addition to fueling catastrophic climate change, deforestation is taking away people’s land, homes, and ways of life. This man, whom I met in the Sumatran rainforest, allowed me to share his story, which Greenpeace used to illustrate the human cost of deforestation at international climate negotiations, making the impacts of deforestation more relatable to new audiences.</image:caption>

Over the years, I’ve engaged with governments in a range of countries and contexts—as a journalist, a campaigner, and a partner. It can be thrilling to sit across from people shaping national and global policy. It can also be nerve-racking and, at times, genuinely challenging. Whatever the situation, understanding how governments operate—and how to work effectively with them—is a core component of mission-driven work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As a former journalist, I know how to design press events to meet reporters’ needs, starting with a strong or creative news peg and including compelling visuals, quotable soundbites, and newsworthy facts and figures. Some events stand out—like this press conference at Johannesburg’s Old Fort Prison introducing Kumi Naidoo as Greenpeace International’s new Executive Director. As a former anti-apartheid activist, the location held deep personal significance for Kumi, and his story helped draw significant media coverage. While at Greenpeace International, I also organized press conferences on a Greenpeace ship sailing down the Congo River and at the historic Gdańsk shipyards.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Services - Report Production & Amplification</image:title>
<image:caption>Publications, including research papers, knowledge briefs, brochures, and annual reports, often serve as the backbone of advocacy, fundraising campaigns, and educational outreach. A strong report deserves an equally strong dissemination strategy designed to ensure the content reaches its intended audiences and effectively communicates the organization’s message. For PEN America’s report on democratic backsliding in Georgia, we timed the release to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the country’s Rose Revolution and amplified it through press releases, op-eds, and a short video tailored for PEN’s high-performing social media platforms. Given the report’s geographically dispersed and diverse audience, we opted not to hold a press conference. Instead, we prioritized digital design for easy online access and printed a limited number of hard copies, in English and Georgian, for PEN America experts to share directly with policymakers and other key audiences. A well-researched report should remain relevant long after its initial release. As attacks on democracy in Georgia amplify, PEN America continues to share key findings on social media and with journalists and civil society actors to help contextualize unfolding events.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Services - Advocacy</image:title>
<image:caption>At the Center for Justice and Accountability, I led advocacy efforts to establish a war crimes tribunal in Liberia, developing and implementing a strategic communications plan focused on: • Educating citizens in Monrovia about the atrocities committed during the civil wars. • Collaborating with Liberian civil society and ensuring the campaign followed their lead. • Engaging rural, largely illiterate communities to help them understand the process and participate meaningfully. • Building international pressure to encourage the Liberian government to pursue justice and establish a tribunal. To meet these goals, I produced a radio play on wartime atrocities with a Monrovian production company; created visual one-pagers for audiences who cannot read; engaged activists via private Liberian Twitter channels; built a coalition of 80+ civil society groups; and generated significant media coverage through open letters and press releases. Designed to complement litigation in Europe and the U.S., the advocacy campaign helped persuade Liberia’s newly elected government to commit to the establishment of a tribunal.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Services - News Acumen</image:title>
<image:caption>Covering a fashion show in Paris for the TV division of Reuters news agency. I worked for a decade as a regular freelance producer for Reuters, covering everything from fashion shows and strikes to sporting events and military maneuvers, often multiple stories a day. The fast pace and wide variety of stories taught me to quickly define a story, capture strong soundbites, and write clear, concise copy for a global audience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Although I’m more often behind the scenes, I’ve prepared and trained professionals across various sectors for panel discussions, presentations, and media interviews. As a result, I’m a confident public speaker myself and have often stepped in for panels and interviews when needed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Services - Field Production</image:title>
<image:caption>As a field producer for 60 Minutes Australia, I spent a week embedded with the French Foreign Legion in the desert of Djibouti (and yes, I'm holding the Kalashnikov upside down). Filming with soldiers famed for their dedication to secrecy demanded strong relationship-building skills, while the intense heat and sandy desert posed constant technical challenges. While interpreting in three languages, I managed shifting logistics and contributed to story production throughout the shoot. Other 60 Minutes stories took me deep into the murky worlds of modeling, athletic doping, Swiss bank secrecy, and even led to my deportation from Equatorial Guinea. I loved field production, which tapped into my strengths in organization, quick problem-solving, attention to detail, and creativity. I continue to rely on these skills today, particularly when managing crisis communications or coordinating complex international events.</image:caption>
