The goal was to ensure that both government and civil society viewed Greenpeace not only as climate experts, but as respectful partners—sensitive to the region’s security concerns and complex social justice dynamics. Working with limited time and resources, I set up interviews on Congolese television, meetings with civil society, and a press conference aboard a Greenpeace ship sailing down the Congo River. Yet cognitive science confirms what humans have long known instinctively: telling human stories is by far the most powerful way to make facts feel real and relevant to audiences. In addition to fueling catastrophic climate change, deforestation is taking away people’s land, homes, and ways of life. For PEN America’s report on democratic backsliding in Georgia, we timed the release to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the country’s Rose Revolution and amplified it through press releases, op-eds, and a short video tailored for PEN’s high-performing social media platforms. Given the report’s geographically dispersed and diverse audience, we opted not to hold a press conference. Instead, we prioritized digital design for easy online access and printed a limited number of hard copies, in English and Georgian, for PEN America experts to share directly with policymakers and other key audiences. A well-researched report should remain relevant long after its initial release.
