Our communications packages can be implemented individually or together depending on your organization’s objectives.

Strategic Communications are powerful tools for winning advocacy campaigns, changing social norms, or simply delivering clear and persuasive messages. We help you identify your organization’s communication needs and design a plan of action to achieve your goals, working in-house or out, drawing on our network of experts as projects demand.

Strategic communications for campaigns

Strategic communications can be a powerful tool in winning advocacy campaigns and changing social norms.

There is nothing more exciting than running an effective communications campaign for a cause you feel strongly about. I learned the art of campaigning while at Greenpeace International, where I helped secure commitments by industry leaders and government officials to help curb climate change. Since then, I have run communications campaigns to defend human rights, provide greater supply-chain transparency, lobby for corporate tax reform (and end income inequality), expand women’s ability to access to financial tools, and support press freedom globally.

Mission, Target Audiences and Key Messages

Strategy is the practice of defining what you want to achieve and the best ways to do so. Strategic communications is based on answers to the following questions: What is your Mission? What Goals will help you move forward? Who is best placed to help you achieve your goals? Which messages will convince them to take action on your behalf? Without answers that resonate with your staff, board and key audiences it is impossible to create a truly strategic communications plan.

I lead you and your team in reviewing your mission and priorities, in creating your theory of change, and in determining target audiences and key messages.

Communications Audit

Are you maximizing the impact of all of your work? What’s missing, what’s working and what’s broken?

A periodic review of your organization’s communications strategy will keep messaging fresh, compelling, and consistent. This service is for organizations that know who they are and want to make sure they are maximizing the impact of their communications work. We take a close look at What’s Working and What’s Not, and analyze the effectiveness of your storytelling, messaging and materials, and your success in reaching target audiences. The audit concludes with recommendations to increase your communication team’s effectiveness.

Communications Bootcamp

To effectively run strategic communications on a small budget it is imperative that your entire team (and probably your board) speak in a clear consistent voice; that they are all aware of your key messages and have an idea of how to share them.

This day-long training (currently held virtually over 2-3 days) begins with an introduction to strategic communications and a review of your mission, goals, and target audiences. This is followed by exercises in audience segmentation, storytelling, and conveying key messages via a variety of channels (training in the use various social media tools is available upon request.) The culmination of this training is the joint creation of one high-level product including: a draft opinion piece, a video RFP, a Newsletter outline, social media plan, or press release.

Building your Communications Department

By systemizing the communications process, you can come close to putting the day-to-day of communications on autopilot. Based on my extensive experience building communications departments for mission-driven organizations, I am practiced in the development of style-guides, sign-off protocols, release forms, social media calendars, writing templates, internal communications channels, analytics reporting, and branding guides that form the backbone of an efficient and effective communications infrastructure.

Project Management and Content Production

There will always be times when you will need outside support to produce key products or campaigns. I am able to project-manage the development of videos, events, websites and other major outreach tools. I also run campaigns and do some writing myself and in the event that I am not able to help you myself, I will happily refer you to someone who can (free of charge of course).
